| Sadly, it has become most apparent, that there is never going to be an easy entry into the cat fancy for any cat on short legs. Following in the course of the Munchkin and Napoleon, in seeking Registration status in TICA, for four of the dwarf breeds was unsuccessful at the 2005 Annual. Rather than allow these new breeds their names and registration as requested by their repressentatives, the TICA BOD used what was termed "rule-smithing" by the MP Regional Director, Pam Barrett, to deny three of the breeds, the Minskin, the Skookum and the Nanus Rex, registration because "their names weren't satisfactory" and in an unprecedented move sent the fourth breed, the Dwelf, to Genetics for further study (to date, we are clueless what the GC is studying as they have not asked for any information to study). The fifth breed presented to the BOD for Registration acceptance, the American Ringtail, a long-legged breed, was accepted unanimously by the BOD at this meeting. The fact that this smacks of discrimination toward the dwarf breeds has not gone without notice. It is the goal of TDCA to reach as many breeders of dwarf breed cats as possible, to bring these breeders & cats into a cooperative environment, where there are others faced with the same challenges, in an effort to work together for our cats and to exercise strength in numbers in other Associations. If neccesary, an attempt will be made by TDCA to get a registry data base started that will record the history of these breeds now in their foundation years. The data will then be available to breeders working with these breeds & for breed working groups wishing to approach other registries with documentation when it is needed for such a time in the future. And yes, we believe there will be a future for dwarf breed cats, they may just have to work a little harder, than their long-legged cousins do, to make it happen. |
